Kick off to LAMF Winter Series- Hebraic Dances

Description

Join us as we kick off the 2019/20 LAMF Winter Series with Hebraic Dances- a chamber music program featuring guest artists from the MN Orchestra and LAMF rosters. Works by Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, and Paul Schoenfield will be performed, each full of sinuous melodies and jewish dance tunes.

 
The program will feature chamber music for clarinet, strings and piano by Sergei Prokofiev and Paul Schoenfield, and will close with a performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor. Each work is filled with sinuous melodies and influences of Jewish dances. Performers will include clarinetist Timothy Zavadil; violinists Jonathan Magness and Suliman Tekalli; violist Olivia Chew; pianist Timothy Lovelace; and artistic director, cellist Scott Lykins.

Timothy Zavadil joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 2007 as clarinetist and bass clarinetist, and has since played those instruments as well as E-flat clarinet, contrabass clarinet, basset horn and saxophones. Previously a member of the Louisville Orchestra, Toledo Symphony and Civic Orchestra of Chicago, he has also performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, National, Toronto and St. Louis symphony orchestras, under such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Sir George Solti, Alan Gilbert, Franz Welser-Möst, Zubin Mehta and Christoph Eschenbach.

Alabama native Jonathan Magness was appointed the Minnesota Orchestra’s associate principal second violin in 2008 after performing as a regular substitute with the Orchestra for one season. From 2014-16 he served as acting principal second violin. He took center stage as soloist in spring 2011, performing Dvorák’s Violin Concerto under the baton of Marin Alsop. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School and a master’s degree with high distinction, from the University of Graz in Austria, studying with Yair Kless.

Violinist Suliman Tekalli was the top prize winner of the 2015 Seoul International Music Competition and prize winner in the Sendai, Lipizer, and Szeryng International Violin Competition, Tekalli's performing career has taken him throughout the world gracing the stages of numerous halls including Stern Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Seoul Arts Center, Wigmore Hall, and the Millennial Hall at the Kennedy Center among others. A native of Daytona Beach, Florida, Tekalli attended the Juilliard School studying with Hyo Kang, and received a master’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music with Joel Smirnoff.

Violist Olivia Chew, a native of Long Island, joined the Rochester Philharmonic in 2014. During her orchestral career, she has been invited to play at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and others. As a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, she served as principal viola of the American Academy of Conducting. She holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studied with Alan de Veritch and Stephen Wyrczynski. After her studies at IU, Chew went to Manhattan School of Music’s Orchestral Studies program, studying with Karen Dreyfus. 

Cellist Scott Lykins is a member of the South Dakota Symphony and Duluth-Superior Symphony and performs in the Twin Cities. He has served as principal cellist for the National Orchestra Institute, National Repertory Orchestras, and Classical Symphony of Chicago. As soloist, concerto appearances include the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra, Heartland Symphony, Northeast Orchestra, and LAMF. He received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in cello performance from the Eastman School of Music, studying with Steven Doane and Alan Harris.

Pianist Timothy Lovelace heads the Collaborative Piano program at the University of Minnesota and is an active recitalist, having been featured at Rio de Janeiro’s Sala Cecilia Meireles, Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, Washington’s Kennedy Center, New York’s Merkin Concert Hall, Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts and on chamber music series sponsored by the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Minnesota and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist, he has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä.

Each summer the Lakes Area Music Festival brings 200 all-star artists from top orchestras and opera companies around the world to perform three weeks of classical music performances in the Brainerd Lakes Area. From chamber music and symphonic orchestra, to productions of opera and ballet, and drawing thousands of attendees each year, LAMF has become one of the most significant summertime destinations for classical music in the Midwest.
